Cambridge, Mass. - Katie Shaughnessy scored three goals and assisted on three others to lead the Harvard University women's lacrosse team to Tuesday afternoon's 10-4 non-conference victory against the University of New Hampshire at Jordan Field.
UNH is now 1-10 overall (1-0 America East) and Harvard is 2-8.
The Crimson took an early 1-0 lead when Shaughnessy scored at 3:49. Tallies by Bessie Clark and Katie O'Brien extended Harvard's lead to 3-0. Jessie Groszkowski scored her 30th of the season and 154th of her career on a free position goal at 24:30 to trim the deficit to 3-1.
Elaine Beatsos scored nine seconds later, however, and Shaughnessy netted her second of the game at 26:34 to extend the home team's advantage to 5-1. Jess Burnap (New Canaan, Conn.), with the assistance of Bronwyn Leto (Oswego, N.Y.), scored with 1:08 remaining in the first half and Harvard entered halftime with a 5-2 lead.
The Crimson scored the initial four goals of the second half to extend its advantage to seven goals, 9-2. Katie Leland (Timonium, Md.) set up Sarah Cahill (Lexington, Mass.) for a goal at 51:01. After a Harvard tally, Laura Dosdall (Wellesley, Mass.) closed out the scoring with 1:03 remaining.
Harvard goalie Laura Mancini finished with 13 saves. UNH starting goalie Danielle Martin (Ellicott City, Md.) made four first-half saves and exited the game at halftime. She reentered with 16:53 remaining - UNH trailed 9-2 - and made three saves the rest of the way for totals of seven saves and six goals allowed. In her collegiate debut, Julie Bevad (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) allowed four goals and was credited with three saves.
UNH returns to action this weekend with a pair of road games against America East conference foes. The Wildcats play Albany on April 18 (4 p.m.) and Binghamton on April 19 (3 p.m.). The next UNH home game is April 25 (3:30 p.m.) against Stony Brook.
