New Hampshire women’s lax selected second

BOSTON -- The University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, which finished second in the 2003 conference standings and as runner-up in the tournament, was selected second in the 2004 America East Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Poll that was released Wednesday.

UNH garnered 40 points, which was second behind defending regular- and postseason-champion Boston University. The Terriers received all seven first-place votes and 49 points. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) was picked third (35 points) in its first year of competition in America East. Vermont (23 points), Albany (22), Stony Brook (19) and Binghamton (8) complete the poll.

UNH returns 13 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's team. Included among the returning players are three 2003 America East All-Conference First Team selections, two Second Team honorees and three All-Rookie Team picks.

New Hampshire begins the 2004 season Feb. 28 at home against Dartmouth College. Game time at Memorial Field is 1 p.m.

The America East Championships will be held May 6-8 at the site of the No. 1 seed, and the tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
