DURHAM, N.H.-- Mel Bourque (Topsfield, Mass.), a sophomore defenseman on the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, was named Defensive Player of the Week by America East on Monday.
Bourque was a dominant force on the defensive end of the field Saturday at Sacred Heart, as she recorded five caused turnovers and one ground ball in a 15-2 Wildcat victory. In limited playing time at Fairfield (she exited the game with less than 20 minutes elapsed) on Sunday, she recorded one draw control in UNH's 18-2 victory.
Through seven games this season, Bourque is ranked fifth on the team in ground balls (11) and third in caused turnovers (six).
Bourque was selected to the America East All-Conference Second Team and All-Rookie Team in 2003.
UNH returns to action March 24 at home against Boston College. Game time at Memorial Field is 3:30 p.m.
