BOSTON-- Cristina Covucci (Concord, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team was named Defensive Player of the Week by America East on Monday. It was the second conference award of the season for Covucci, who earned the same distinction March 29.
Covucci, a freshman midfielder, played a pivotal role in UNH's 19-4 victory at Stony Brook University on April 10 as her ability to win possession of the ball - she recorded a game-high five ground balls as well as three draw controls - allowed the Wildcats to stay on the attack for a majority of the game.
Covucci, who has contributed offensively with two goals and an assist, leads the Wildcats in ground balls (37), draw controls (20) and caused turnovers (17). She ranks third in the America East conference in ground balls (3.70 per game) and is tied for fourth in caused turnovers (1.70 per game).
New Hampshire, which has won five consecutive games, returns to action April 14 at home vs. Harvard. Game time at Memorial Field is 3:30 p.m.
