DURHAM, N.H. -- Sandy Bridgeman, the ninth-year head coach of the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, announced Monday that five student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to begin NCAA competition for UNH in the 2006 season.
The incoming class includes two players from the Granite State as Ashley Durepo (Concord) will join the Wildcat attack and Beth Stankus (Derry) will strengthen the defense. Sarah Von Bargen (East Setauket, N.Y.) Jessica Flaherty (Webster, N.Y.) are midfielders and Kelsey Johnson (Byfield, Mass.) is another attack.
"I am truly excited about this year's recruiting class," said Bridgeman, who guided the 2004 Wildcats to the NCAA tournament. "They are a very talented group of student-athletes who possess the determination and competitive attitude that defines New Hampshire lacrosse. There is no doubt that this class will have a significant impact on our program over the next four years."
Durepo will captain the 2005 Concord High School girls lacrosse team and has been an All-State First Team selection (2003). Durepo has also played on the Upper New England 1 team as well as the Green Mountain Girls and Granite State Elite club teams.
Flaherty is a 12-time varsity letterwinner -- four each with lacrosse, soccer and volleyball -- at Webster Thomas High School. She received All-County First Team and Team MVP honors as a junior and was an All-County Second Team selection as a sophomore. Flaherty, who has played club lacrosse for Lady Roc for three years, is a four-time Scholar Athlete Award winner who has maintained High Honor Roll status throughout high school.
Johnson has been a letterwinner in lacrosse, field hockey and ice hockey at Governor Dummer Academy. An All-League Honorable Mention selection in 2004, she is captain elect of the 2005 lacrosse team. She was co-captain of the 2004 field hockey team and earned all-league honors. Johnson is also captain of the ice hockey team and has been a two-time All-League Honorable Mention.
Stankus, a defender, led Pinkerton Academy to the 2004 Division 1 state championship. She earned All-State First Team recognition and Eagle Tribune All-Star Honorable Mention that year. Stankus received the latter honor, as well as All-State Second Team, as a sophomore. Stankus, who has also lettered in basketball and volleyball at Pinkerton, earned Academic All-America honors last year. She has also played club lacrosse for Green Mountain and Upper New England.
Von Bargen has played both attack and midfield on the Ward Melville High School lacrosse team. In 2004, she was an All-America Honorable Mention selection and was also named to the all-county team. Von Bargen, a four-year member of the Long Island Yellow Jackets elite club team, won a silver medal with the Long Island Empire State Team and led the New York 1 team to the U.S. Lacrosse national finals. An Honor Roll student, Von Bargen has also received All-State and All-Long Island honors as a letterwinner on the field hockey team.
UNH won the 2004 America East title and advanced to the NCAA championships.
