UNH lacrosse receives top player, defender honors
Katie Leland

BOSTON -- Katie Leland (Timonium, Md.), a senior tri-captain on the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, was named America East Player of the Week and teammate Ashley Milley (Sudbury, Mass.) was honored as the conference's Defender of the Week as announced by America East on Monday.

The duo's efforts led UNH to a 14-13 overtime victory March 16 at 18th-ranked Towson University, and that win marked the first by the Wildcats against a nationally-ranked team since April 21, 2001, when they were 19-6 victors against 20th-ranked Stanford University.

Leland sparked UNH to its overtime victory vs. Towson with a game-high six goals, including the tally that tied the score 13-13 with 75 seconds remaining in regulation. Leland also recorded two assists March 14 at Vanderbilt University to finish the week with eight points (six goals, two assists), three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Milley matched her career high of 13 saves to help UNH record its win on the road against Towson. Two of those stops were in the six-minute overtime session to keep the Tiger scoreless in the extra session, and more than half of her total - seven - came in the second half. Milley also stopped seven of 15 shots on goal at Vanderbilt.

UNH (2-4 overall, 0-0 America East) returns to action March 25 (3 p.m.) at the University of Massachusetts. The Wildcats' next home game is March 29 (3 p.m.) vs. Brown University.
