UNH women's lax duo honored by America East

BOSTON ~ Katie Leland (Timonium, Md,), a senior tri-captain on the University of New Hampshire women's lacrosse team, was named Player of the Week and teammate Sarah Von Bargen (East Setauket, N,Y.) was honored as Rookie of the Week by America East on Monday. The duo sparked the Wildcats to victories against both Brown University (17-14) and University at Albany (15-10) last week.

Leland, who also garnered the league's Player of the Week honor March 20, recorded nine goals and six assists for 15 points, as well as six ground balls, three caused turnovers and four draw controls last week. In UNH's conference opener vs. Albany, Leland recorded four goals and an assist in the first half to spark the 'Cats to a 10-2 halftime lead. Against Brown, Leland finished with a season-high eight points on five goals - including the game-winning tally - and three assists to increase her career point total to 229, which is No. 2 only to Karen Geromini's benchmark of 235.

Von Bargen, also named the Rookie of the Week on March 13, recorded six points, all on goals. She also registered five ground balls, two caused turnovers and six draw controls in the victories. Von Bargen netted four goals, including the first two of the game to spark a 5-0 run and the team's last goal to give UNH a 17-13 lead with 3:26 remaining against Brown. She then scored two goals vs. Albany to give her at least one goal in all nine games this season, and that marks the longest goal-scoring streak at the start of a UNH career in the program's history.

Leland leads the Wildcats in goals (16), assists (16) and points (41). She also ranks third in ground balls with 24.

Von Bargen is second on the team in both goals (24) and points (27). She has a team-high 20 draw controls and is second in caused turnovers (11).

New Hampshire has won four consecutive games, to improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in America East. The Wildcats return to action April 5 (3:30 p.m.) at the University of Vermont UNH begins a four-game homestand April S (12 p.m.) vs. UMBC.
