DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire women’s lacrosse head coach Sandy Bridgeman has announced the selection of senior midfielders Ashley Crook (So. Burlington, Vt.) and Bailley Mazur (Longmeadow, Mass.) as team captains for the 2008 season. The two were selected through a vote by team members and the coaching staff.

“I am very excited about our 2008 team captains,” 12th-year UNH head coach Bridgeman said. “They are outstanding role models for our younger players and are fully committed to building a championship program in 2008. They both work hard on the field and effectively work with the coaching staff to better themselves and the team. Each captain carries different strengths and together they balance each other very well.”

Crook overcame injury last season to play in the last four games, including the America East semifinal, and averaged a team-best 3.00 ground balls per game. She emerged as a starter in 2006 and was one of just five Wildcats to record double digits in ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers.

Mazur earned America East All-Conference First Team and All-Championship Team accolades last year for her defensive prowess; she ranked second on the team in both ground balls and draw controls. As a sophomore, Mazur started all 18 games and also ranked among the team leaders in both ground balls and draw controls.

UNH returns 20 players from last year’s team that advanced to the America East tournament for the 10th consecutive year. The Wildcats officially began practice Sept. 17 and will once again play a number of fall exhibition games, both at UNH’s Memorial Field as well as on the road, in preparation for the 2008 season, which includes exhibition games at the Loyola tournament in early February and begins Feb. 24 at Hofstra University.
