CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Kate Keagins (Bayshore, N.Y.), a freshman midfielder on the 13th-ranked University of New Hampshire women’s lacrosse team, was named Rookie of the Week by America East on Monday.
Keagins recorded nine points – all on goals – as well as three draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover in two games last week. She scored a career-high six goals (the six points also marked a personal best), including the game-tying goal with 92 seconds remaining in regulation, to help UNH erase a 10-goal deficit at Albany and send the game into overtime; she also scored twice in UNH’s late first-half surge in which the ‘Cats scored five times in a span of 3:30. Keagins was credited with two ground balls, one caused turnover and two draw controls in that March 21 game vs. the Great Danes.
Keagins scored three goals – all in the second half – to spark UNH’s 13-10 come-from-behind win vs. UMass on March 18. Her goals at 10:28 and 8:32 lifted the ‘Cats into a 10-10 tie. Keagins’ first tally came during a four-goal spurt that lifted UNH within 9-8.
Keagins has played in all nine games this season, and her 12 goals account for all of her points. Keagins, who has a .500 shooting percentage, has also been credited with eight draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Keagins is the second Wildcat to receive the America East Rookie of the Week award this season. JoJo Curro (Amherst, N.H.) was the inaugural ’09 recipient Feb. 23.
New Hampshire (6-3 overall, 0-1 America East) returns to action March 28 at home against Stony Brook University. Game time at Memorial Field is 1 p.m.
