Game Notes: Women's Lax Plays Host to Iona (March 27)

The State of New Hampshire  The UNH women's lacrosse team enters Wednesday's game vs. Iona with a 2-6 overall record that includes 0-1 in America East and 1-1 at home. The Wildcats had their two-game winning streak snapped with an 11-6 loss at Albany this past Sunday, March 24.

Shoot to Score  UNH has scored on nearly half of its shots with a .488 shooting percentage (83 goals/170 shots); in comparison, the opponents have a .438 shooting percentage (96/219). Top scorer Jenny Simpson (New Canaan, Conn.) leads the Wildcats at .590 (23 goals/39 shots) and that includes .900 (9/10) on free positions.

Half by Half New Hampshire has outscored the opposition 44-42 in the first half and the Wildcats have been outscored 52-38 in the second half.

Gimme the Ball  Kathleen O'Keefe (Chatham, N.J.) is atop the UNH leaderboard in ground balls (21) and is tied for second in caused turnovers (seven). Cori Rees (Hampstead, N.H.) is second in ground balls (19) and tied with O'Keefe with seven CTOs, while Casey Doyle (Ivyland, Pa.) ranks first in caused turnovers (eight) and is third in ground balls (12). The duo of Laura Puccia (Fairport, N.Y.) and Kayleigh Hinkle (Glenelg, Md.) account for 48% of UNH's 83 draw controls with Puccia at 26 and Hinkle at 14.

Streaking  Sophomore attack Kayleigh Hinkle has the team's longest active point-scoring streak of 12 games; she has 29 points (10g, 19a) in that span. Hinkle also holds UNH's longest active assist streak at seven games; she has 19 points (4g, 15a) in that stretch ... Senior attack Jenny Simpson has scored a goal in nine consecutive games – best among all 'Cats – and the nine-game point-scoring streak is second longest on the squad; Simpson has 30 points (26g, 4a) during her nine-game streak... Hinkle, Simpson and freshman attack Laura McHoul (Westwood, Mass.) are the three Wildcats who have recorded a point every game this season.

Conference Call  In the America East conference, UNH is ranked fifth in offense (10.38 goals/game) and seventh in defense (11.85 GAA). The Wildcats are sixth in shots per game (21.25) but second in shooting percentage (.488). On the individual leaderboards, Jenny Simpson is atop the leaderboard in free-position goals (nine; 1.50 per game) and is fourth in goals (2.88 gpg) as well as eighth in points (3.38 ppg) while Kayleigh Hinkle (1.88 apg) and Laura McHoul (1.75) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in assists. In other stats, Wildcats rank 2 & 5 in ground balls with Kathleen O'Keefe at 2.62 per game and Cori Rees at 2.38. O'Keefe is also sixth in save percentage (.448) and second in saves per game (9.25).

National Numbers  In the national statistics (through March 24), Kathleen O'Keefe is No. 7 in saves per game (9.25), 16th in saves (74) as well as 29th in save percentage (.448) and 33rd in ground balls (2.63 per game); Kayleigh Hinkle is 26th in assists per game (1.88) and Jenny Simpson ranks 28th in gaols per game (2.88). UNH is ranked 36th in ground balls (16.88 per game) and 46th in caused turnovers (7.88 per game).

Assist Me  Two UNH Wildcats have already recorded double digits in assists with Kayleigh Hinkle at 15 and Laura McHoul at 14. Last year, only one 'Cat reached double figures in assists (Ilana Cohen, 20).

A Nifty 50  Sophomore midfielder Laura Puccia scored her 50th career goal with the first of her two goals March 24 at Albany. Puccia recorded her 50th career draw control with the last of her three DCs in that game at Albany.

Century Milestone  Senior attack Jenny Simpson recorded her 100th career point with the fifth of her career-high six goals at UConn on March 6. She enters Wednesday's game with 92 goals and 20 assists for 112 points in 56 games.

The Series vs Iona  Wednesday's game will mark the first ever meeting between the UNH and Iona women's lacrosse programs.

Scouting the Gaels  Iona College enters Wednesday's game with a 2-7 overall record that includes 1-4 on the road ... Iona has lost four consecutive games following a 14-9 setback to St. Bonaventure (March 23) ... This will be the team's second game against an America East opponents; IC lost 21-3 at Stony Brook last Wednesday ... Kylie Gregory leads the Gaels in goals (29) and points (35); she is atop the leaderboard in caused turnovers, tied for second in ground balls and is fourth in draw controls ... Mary Kate McCormick is second in both goals (12) and points (17); she has a team-high 27 draw controls ... Brittney Mabus leads the squad in assists (nine) and is third in points (13) ... Maria Ortiz has been the primary goalkeeper; she has played in all nine games and 433:17 of a possible 553:17; Ortiz has a 2-6 record with a 14.12 GAA and .386 save percentage.

Common Opponents  New Hampshire and Iona have played two common opponents in 2013. UNH lost to both UConn (11-9) and UMass (18-9); Iona also lost to UConn (13-2) and UMass (22-6).
