Leanne Smith (North Conway, N.H.), the EISA Female Rookie Skier of the Year and an All-East First Team selection as a freshman alpine skier at the University of New Hampshire in 2006, is taking a year away from UNH to pursue an opportunity with the U.S. Ski Team in Park City, Utah.
“We are all excited for Leanne and what she has accomplished here in her short time at UNH,” UNH alpine head coach Kurt Simard said. “This opportunity is a reflection of both Leanne’s hard work and determination. It also speaks to what our program has to offer.”
Due to her outstanding performances throughout the 2006 ski season while on the UNH ski team, Smith was named to this elite group. She has been training with this group since May and has attended training camps in Mamouth Mountain, Calif., La Parva, Chili and most recently in Summit County, Colo.
Highlights of Smith’s freshman season at UNH included winning the giant slalom at the Dartmouth Carnival and seven other top-10 finishes, including fourth place in the giant slalom and sixth in the slalom at the EISA Championship. Her 11th-place finish played a key role in UNH’s winning the giant slalom at the 2006 NCAA Championships. Smith was a top junior at the 2006 U.S. National Championships in both downhill and super-g.
Smith trained on the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Team prior to attending UNH in the fall of 2005. Leanne begins her season racing the Nor Am circuit in Colorado and Lake Louise, Alberta.
UNH placed ninth at the 2006 NCAA Ski Championship and is the host of the 2007 NCAAs March 7-10 at Attitash and Jackson XC in the Mt. Washington Valley of New Hampshire.
