– Veronique Archambault-Leger (Montreal, Quebec) won the giant slalom for the second time in as many weeks to lead a rookie triumvirate of University of New Hampshire skiers in the top six of that event and the UNH ski team to fourth place overall at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival, which was held Feb. 2-3.
    UNH recorded the top team score in Friday’s women’s giant slalom with 91 points and recorded 531 points overall. Dartmouth College (634 points), Vermont (631) and Middlebury College (596) finished ahead of the Wildcats in the 11-team carnival.
    Archambault-Leger was the only skier to complete the first run of Friday’s women’s giant slalom under 70 seconds (1:09.40) and was clocked in 1:12.92 in the second run for a winning overall time of 2:22.32. Cynthia Tessier (Rawdon, Quebec) took fourth place with a time of 2:25.51 on the Mt. Mansfield course on Friday to edge teammate Aileen Farrell (Ottawa, Ontario), who was sixth in 2:25.86.
    Sean McNamara (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) was the top ‘Cat in Friday’s men’s giant slalom with a fifth-place finish of 2:17.17. Joe Dunn (Stockbridge, Vt.) finished 11th in 2:18.39 and Randall Bloom (Norwalk, Conn.) completed the scoring in 16th place with a time of 2:19.76.
    In Friday’s Nordic competition, Rody Lageson (St. Paul, Minn.) recorded UNH’s top finish with 12th place with a time of 1:03:32.4 in the men’s 20K classic at the Trapp Family Lodge. Erick Anderson (Maplewood, Minn.) was timed in 1:04:52.2 for 18th place and Daniel Lewis (Jackson, Wyo.) finished 25th in 1:05:17.9.
    Sarah Wright (Wyoming, Minn.) led the UNH contingent in the women’s 15K classic race by completing the course in 54:54.8 for 17th place. Mandy Vincent-Lang (Alaska, Anchorage) was next to cross the finish line at 55:05.1 and Heather Zimmerman (Bethel, Maine) capped the team’s scoring in 34th place (57:55.0).
    The alpine teams raced on the giant slalom course again Saturday, and Archambault-Leger finished .47-of-a-second behind the winner to capture second place with a time of 1:57.86. Farrell had another strong effort with a fifth-place finish in 1:58.27 and Mindy Regii (Campton, N.H.) completed the scoring in 20th place at 2:00.78.
    UNH’s men’s squad recorded the second highest team score in Saturday’s giant slalom with three top-10 finishes for a total of 83 points. McNamara led the way in fourth place with a time of 1:51.20 and was followed closely by Dunn in seventh place at 1:52.65 and Willie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) in eighth at 1:53.05. In addition, Bloom took 13th place in 1:54.63.
    In Saturday’s Nordic competition, the women’s team of Wright, Vincent-Lang and Zimmerman combined for a time of 56:55.5 in the 3x6 freestyle relay to finish in ninth place. The men’s team of Lageson, Anderson and Shane MacDowell (Peru, Mass.) completed the 3x6 men’s freestyle relay course in 46:20.6 for eighth place.
    The UNH ski team returns to action Feb. 9-10 at the Dartmouth Carnival. The Alpine events will be held at Oak Hill and the Nordic events are at Skiway.
