STOWE, Vt. – Steven Bedard (Cheshire, Mass.) and Dylan McGuffin (Northfield, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire ski team both recorded a fourth-place finish at the TD Banknorth Eastern Cup Opener, which was held Dec. 20-21 at the Trapp Family Lodge.
In Saturday’s opening day of competition, Bedard finished fourth in the Men Sprint competition. He advanced to the Group A final by winning both the second quarterfinal and first semifinal heats. Harrison Harb (Contoocook, N.H.) finished 12th overall with a sixth-place effort in the Group B final; he skied to the finals with a second-place effort behind Bedard in the second quarterfinal and fourth place in the first semifinal.
On the second day of competition, McGuffin was the fourth of 182 racers to cross the finish line in the Men Distance race. McGuffin completed the 10K course in 33 minutes, 25.8 seconds. UNH teammate Michael Lessard (Greene, Maine) took 14th place with a time of 23:24.0.
In the Women Distance competition, Wildcat Marlijne Cook (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) completed the 5K course in 20:23.1 to earn 11th place.
New Hampshire, which finished 11th at the 2008 NCAA Ski Championships, begins the 2009 EISA carnival season Jan. 23 at the Bates Winter Carnival.
