Kantor, Coffey Lead Ski Team to 2nd on opening day of UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt.Sam Coffey (Snowmass, Colo.) raced to a career-high, third-place finish in the men's giant slalom race and Jenna Kantor (East Burke, Vt.) bolted to a personal-best fourth place in women's GS at Mount Mansfield as the University of New Hampshire skiing team grabbed second place on the opening day of the Vermont Winter Carnival on Friday.

With 188 points, the Wildcats trail only Dartmouth (204 points) with two days of racing remaining at the carnival. Middlebury (174) is currently third, followed by Vermont (148) and Bates (143).

The UNH's men's alpine team placed second in the GS with 111 points, behind UVM (118). Coffey, who earned 44 points for his efforts, posted a combined time of 2 minutes, 6.31 seconds, a mere 1.18 seconds behind GS winner Ben Morse of Dartmouth. Paul Atkinson (Toronto, Ontario) clocked in at 2:06.81 to accrue 39 points for a season-high fifth-place run, and Taylor Vest-Burton (Breckenridge, Colo.) registered his third top-15 result of the EISA season by crossing the finish line in 2:07.55 for 12th place (28 points).

Kantor, competing in her home state, raced to the bottom of the mountain in a combined 2:12.28 to notch 41 points to highlight the women's alpine team's results. Laura Halupowski (North Conway, N.H.) earned the first points (22) of her UNH career by recording a time of 2:15.26 for 20th place. Catherine Blanchard (Eastman, Quebec) was the third-fastest Wildcat and No. 32 overall with a combined effort of 2:16.77 for 14 points. The Wildcats finished fifth with 77 points in the race won by Dartmouth (103 points).

The UVM Carnival continues Saturday with the men's and women's slalom races at Mount Mansfield and the first day of cross-country competition at Trapp Family Lodge.
