MIDWAY, Utah – University of New Hampshire senior Nordic skier Liz Guiney (Park City, Utah) was named Tuesday to the United States Ski Team for the U23 World Championships, which will take place in Liberec, Czech Republic, Jan. 21-27.
Guiney, a two-time NCAA Championship competitor, earned one of five slots on the national team based on points accumulated during the course of four races held Jan. 2-8 at the U.S. Cross Country Championships at Soldier Hollow Cross-Country Ski Resort. The UNH Nordic team co-captain and 2012 team MVP accrued 125 points for her best two results; she tallied 80 points, which was second among U23 competitors and seventh overall, in the classic sprint race Jan. 2 and notched 45 points (18th place, fifth U23) in the 10K freestyle race Jan. 4.
Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) was selected as a second alternate for the U.S. Junior World Championship team after amassing 71 points in her best two of three race results. The sophomore, who competed at the USSA Cross Country Junior Championships last March, accumulated 45 points (27th place overall, third place juniors) in the 10K free and tacked on 26 points (30th place, eighth juniors) in the classic sprints.
Will Meyer (Bozeman, Mont.), Sam Reed (Keene, N.H.) and Johnny Springer (Jackson, Wyo.) represented the Wildcat men's Nordic team at U.S. Nationals. Springer was the top 'Cat in the classic sprints with a 29th-place finish among U23 competitors; Reed was 24th among junior skiers in the same race. Reed added a 20th-place result among juniors in the 10K classic mass start, while Meyer claimed 44th place in the same division. Springer notched 40th among U23 skiers in the 30K classic mass start.
The UNH Nordic ski team begins EISA competition at the St. Lawrence Carnival on Jan. 18-19 at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.
