DURHAM, N.H. - Cyndi Poehner (Greenwich, Conn.) and Debbie Newman (Ashford, Conn.) of the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team were recently honored by Soccer Buzz Magazine with a selection to the publication's All-Regional team. Poehner, a senior back, was named to the Northeast Region Third Team and Newman, a freshman midfielder, was voted to the Northeast Region All-Freshman Team.
Poehner, whose other 2002 honors included America East All-Conference Second Team and America East All-Championship Team, excelled in her role as the leader of the team's backfield. The Wildcats recorded nine shutouts in 18 matches and allowed just one goal four times to record an America East leading 0.89 goals allowed per game. Poehner was also a weapon on offense, as her counterattacks and dangerous services into the box created scoring opportunities for the Wildcats. She recorded a goal and an assist this season and finished her career with six points on two goals and two assists in 72 career games.
Newman was one of UNH's most impressive rookies and was an integral part of the team's defensive effort. She immediately stepped into a starting role in the season opener vs. Georgia Southern and started all 18 matches. She recorded her first career point with an assist at Albany (Sept. 22) and also had an assist vs. Holy Cross (Oct. 15); the Wildcats won both games.
UNH finished the 2002 season with a 10-7-1 record that included a 5-2-1 mark in America East.
