CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Oregon State University women's soccer team netted two goals in a span of 4:25 early in the second half to break open a close game en route to a 4-0 victory against the University of New Hampshire in Friday night's opening-round action of the Nike Invitational Tournament at OSU's Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
UNH is now 1-2-0 overall while OSU is still unbeaten at 3-0-0.
Oregon State netted a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute on a goal by Jodi Taylor and the home team took that one-goal advantage into halftime. Alyssa Blackwell scored at 50:11 and Stacey Mescher struck at 54:36 to extend the lead to 3-0. Chloe Mutnick capped the scoring at 85:25.
UNH goalkeeper Liz MacKay (Scituate, Mass.) recorded six saves while the OSU goalkeeping tandem of Melissa Onstad (four saves) and Amy Johnson (zero saves) combined for the shutout.
The final score did not belie how close the match was. Statistics, which reflected a slight edge to OSU in both shots (16-13) and corner kicks (4-2), were a better barometer.
UNH concludes play in the Nike Invitational Tournament vs. Fresno State on Sept. 5. The Wildcats play their home opener Sept. 9 vs. intrastate rival Dartmouth College. Game time at Lewis Fields is 4 p.m.
