Senior forward Chiara Best (Rose Valley, Pa.) and junior back Debbie Newman (Union, Conn.) of the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team were recently named to the University Division District I First Team of the CoSIDA 2004 Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team.

Best became UNH's all-time leading scorer Nov. 2 against the University of Hartford in the first round of the America East Championships. Best supplanted Diane McLoughlin (87 points) atop the leaderboard as her three-point effort vs. the Hawks increased her career total to 88.

Best led the 2004 Wildcats in goals (14), game-winning goals (five) and points (31) and she tied for second in assists (three). Both the goal and point totals rank No. 2 on UNH's list of single-season superlatives. Her end-of-the-regular-season numbers ranked first in America East in goals and third in points. Best's other 2004 honors included NEWISA All-New England Second Team, America East Striker of the Year and All-Conference First Team.

Newman started all 20 matches in which she played this season and was the leader of the defensive unit. Under her direction, the Wildcats allowed just one goal in each of the last five games of the regular season and shut out Hartford in the opener of this year's conference tourney. Newman's other 2004 honors included NEWISA All-New England Second Team and America East All-Conference Second Team.

UNH earned a share of the 2004 America East regular-season title with a 6-3-0 conference record. The Wildcats ended the year at 11-8-2 overall and the 11 victories tied for the second-highest single-season mark in the program's history.
