Marianne Rivard

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team opened the 2006 campaign on the right foot by shutting down the offense of the University of Massachusetts Minutewomen, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon played on Rudd Field.

UNH forward Marianne Rivard (West Kingston, R.I.) tallied the Wildcats first goal of the season at the 23:18 mark from five-yards out on a right cross feed from junior Nicole Lucey (Keene, N.H.). The 'Cats added an insurance goal minutes later off a pass from senior co-captain Kelly Collins (Bedford, N.H.) who found teammate Katie Lutar (Guilford, Conn.) 14-yards out on a shot that sailed just under the cross bar and just out of arms reach of UMASS goalkeeper Kristin Walker.

The stingy UNH defense held their opposition to nine shots on the afternoon and senior goalkeeper Lynn Gugliuzza (Kenmore, N.Y.) registered four saves in the victory.

The Wildcats (1-0-0) continue their non-conference schedule with a visit to Brown University on Friday (Sept. 1) with the match to begin at 5:00 p.m.
