DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women’s soccer team was honored when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association and SoccerBuzz all announced their regional teams recently.
Caitlin Whelan

Juniors Michelle Sheehan (Belmont, Mass.) and Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass.) were selected to the NSCAA Division I All-Northeast Region Team. Sheehan was named to the Second Team, while Whelan was picked for the Third Team. This was the first time a Wildcat received the honor since Chiara Best was named to the Second Team in 2004.
Sheehan and Whelan were again tabbed for the NEWISA All-New England Team, and were joined by senior Caitlyn Serafine (Canandaigua, N.Y.). Sheehan and Whelan were both selected to the First Team, while Serafine was named to the Second Team. The Wildcats have had at least one player named to the squad in four of the last six seasons. Hillary Mefferd was the most recent Wildcat named, garnering the honor in 2006.
It was Sheehan and Whelan again when SoccerBuzz named their All-Northeast Region Team. This time however, Whelan was selected to the Second Team, with Sheehan being named to the Third Team.

Sheehan, who was recently named a co-captain for the 2008 season, finished the 2007 campaign with 11 goals and 25 points, which was the fifth-highest goal total and sixth-highest point total in a single season at UNH. That effort earned her the 2007 America East Striker of the Year award and had her named to the America East All-Conference First Team, as well as the America East All-Academic Team. She was also named America East Player of the Week for the weeks ending Sept. 3 and Oct. 7.

Whelan gave Sheehan a run for her money all season long, leading the team in assists (7), but finishing behind Sheehan in goals (5) and points (17). Whelan was named America East Midfielder of the Year and was selected to the America East All-Conference First Team. She was also selected as America East Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 9.

Caitlyn Serafine
Serafine, who was also selected to play in the NEWISA 2007 Senior Bowl on Dec. 12 at Bryant University, put together a fine season for the Wildcats this year as she started all 20 games for the team and was a consistent contributor on defense. Her stellar play in the backfield played a major part in the Wildcats’ eight shutouts, as well as their 0.88 goals-against-average and .820 save percentage that were ranked 67th and 76th in the country, respectively. The co-captain collected five points on two goals and one assist, and was named to the America East All-Conference First Team, America East All-Academic Team and America East All-Championship Team.

The Wildcats finished the season with an 11-7-2 overall record, including 6-1-1 in the conference. The win total was the second highest in program history. The ‘Cats were awarded their first ever No. 1 seed in the America East tournament, and made it to the championship game – which they hosted for the first time ever – for the second time in school history.
