WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS WITH 1-0 LOSS TO GEORGE WASHINGTON

BURLINGTON, Vt.
–Kristen Slack scored in the 19th minute and Amie Kern made five saves to lead the George Washington University women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory against University of New Hampshire in Friday’s opening round of the UVM TD Banknorth Classic at Centennial Field.

UNH, which lost eight games by a one-goal margin last season (including four by a 1-0 score), is 0-1-0 in 2007. This match also marked the season opener for GW.

The Colonials netted the only goal of the game at 18:30, when Slack finished off a pass from Meg Pyle.

UNH goalkeeper Ally Yost (Langhorne, Pa.) made three saves in her collegiate debut.

The Wildcats recorded an 18-5 shot advantage, including 10-2 in the first half, as well as a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Sara Hourihan (Lynnfield, Mass.), the team’s leading scorer each of the past two seasons, recorded four shots, as did newcomer and classmate Caitlin Whelan (Weymouth, Mass.).

New Hampshire returns to action Sept. 2 against Central Arkansas, which lost 1-0 to UVM on Friday, for second-day action in the UVM TD Banknorth Classic. UNH’s home opener is Sept. 5 against College of the Holy Cross. Game time at Bremner Field is 7 p.m.
