Women's Soccer Takes Down Rhode Island, 1-0

KINGSTON, R.I. — Senior Stephanie Gilkenson (Cranston, R.I.) scored a goal in the 24th minute of the first half to propel the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Rhode Island Friday evening at the URI Soccer Complex.

The win improves the Wildcats to 1-4 on the season, as they hand the Rams their first loss of the year, dropping to 3-1-1.

Gilkenson recorded the tally when she fired a shot from the top of the box that ricocheted off the underside of the crossbar and into the goal at 23:23. Senior Taylor Finley (Bedford, N.H.) and freshman Meghan Ledwith (Yardley, Pa.) were both credited with assists on the play.

Rhode Island held a 10-9 advantage in total shots, but UNH put seven attempts on goal compared to just four by the Rams. New Hampshire held an 8-2 edge in shots in the first stanza.

Ledwith led the 'Cats with a pair of shots, both on goal. Freshman Jenna Shaddock (Halifax, Nova Scotia) also notched two shots, putting one on net in the win.

Ashley Harris turned away four shots in net for the Rams, while sophomore Erica Correa (Cheshire, Conn.) also recorded four stops for New Hampshire.

The Wildcats are back in action Sunday, Sept. 11 when they return home to host Northeastern University (1 p.m.) at Lewis Fields.
