NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Erica Jesseman (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Keely Maguire (Georgetown, Mass.) each won individual titles to lead the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team to a first-place finish after day two of the New England Championships on Friday at Southern Connecticut State University's Jess Dow Field.
With 38 points, the Wildcats currently lead the way after five events scored heading into the third and final day of competition on Saturday.
Jesseman, who captured the 10,000m title one year ago, took first in the 5,000m as she crossed the finish line in a time of 17:04.34. Freshman Elise Beattie (Woodstock, Ill.) placed sixth at 17:46.26.
The Wildcats were impressive in the 10,000m, led by Maguire who was victorious in a time of 36:41.12, while senior Sydney Fitzpatrick (Billerica, Mass.) was not far behind as she finished second at 37:11.27. Sophomore Erin Phillips (Belmont, N.H.) placed seventh in a time of 38:15.03.
Sophomore Rosemary Read (West Greenwich, R.I.) finished seventh in the hammer throw with a toss of 49.96m.
In the long jump, sophomore Melanie Frazier (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Kaitlyn Dugan (Hatfield, Pa.) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, with equal leaps of 5.41m, while Frazier edged out her teammate in the final flight.
Senior Chelsey Canavan (Stoneham, Mass.) placed third in the preliminaries of the 400m in a time of 56.55 to move on to Saturday's final.
The Wildcats wrap up the New England Championships on Saturday, May 14.
