DURHAM, N.H.- The University of New Hampshire women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Oregon University in the final game of the UNH Tournament Saturday night and the Ducks went on to win the invitational with an undefeated 3-0 mark.
The Wildcats needed a victory against Oregon to claim a three-way tie, but the Ducks were too tough winning 15-12, 15-3, 15-7.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats received strong efforts from Bethany Cole (Canterbury, N.H.). Jillian Ross (Naperville, Ill.) and Kim Mirt-Poen (Essex, Iowa). Cole, who was the Wildcats lone representative on the All-Tournament team, finished the game with eight kills and two solo blocks. Ross notched nine kills and Mirts-Poen registered eight kills and 12 digs. Oregon was led by Julie Gerlach (37 assists), Monique Tobbagi (12 kills, 12 digs) and Amy Banducci (12 kills, nine digs), all of whom were named to the All-Tournament team.
In UNH's first game of the afternoon, the Wildcats had little trouble and cruised to a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross. UNH took the first game 15-7 and then followed it up with 15-4 and 15-11 victories.
Leisha Campbell (Oswego, N.Y.) and Jennifer Walker (Fulton, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with 11 kills each. In her first collegiate action, freshman Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass) made a gigantic impression with a match-high 15 digs and eight kills. Once again, Stacy Barnett (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was the go-to setter and recorded a match-high 35 assists on the night. Freshman Amber Wade (San Diego, Calif.) also had a strong game in her college debut and came on in relief of Barnett and recorded 10 assists.
In other tournament action Saturday, Oregon defeated Rutgers 3-1 and Rutgers defeated Holy Cross 3-0.
UNH returns to action Wednesday evening when the Wildcats host Boston College at Lundholm Gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m.
