STORRS, Conn.- The University of New Hampshire women's volleyball team defeated the University of New Mexico, 3-1 in the opening day of the UConn Classic on Friday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion. The game scores were 15-5, 7-15, 15-7 and 15-10.
In the morning match, UNH defeated Southern Methodist University, 3-2. The game scores were 15-9, 14-16, 15-7, 10-15 and 15-11. With the pair of wins, UNH is now 8-6 overall. UNH is over the .500 mark for the first time this year with the pair of wins.
In the Southern Methodist match, UNH was led by junior Katie Jentes (Madbury, N.H.) who recorded a season, team and match-high 20 kills. Jentes also added five digs and two service aces. Junior Jennifer Walker (Fulton, N.Y.) had another solid performance with 15 kills, nine digs and six total blocks. Junior setter Stacy Barnett (Crystal Lake, Ill.) notched a team and match-high 53 assists and 14 digs. Senior co-captains Bethany Cole (Canterbury, N.H.) and Leisha Campbell (Oswego, N.Y.) each tallied eight kills apiece in the victory for UNH. New Hampshire received strong serving in the fifth game from senior Jessica Houle (Duham, N.H.) who tallied three aces in than last stanza.
In the New Mexico match, Cole, and Ross each notched a team-high 12 kills, while Campbell and Jentes had nine and seven kills respectively. Jentes also chipped in a team-high 12 digs. Barnett posted 39 assists in the second win of the day.
The Cats' conclude the UConn Classic tomorrow as they face Harvard University at 2:30 p.m. and close out the tournament, playing hosts University of Connecticut at 7:30 p.m.
