DURHAM, N.H. – Kim Mirts-Poen (Essex, Iowa) recorded match highs in both kills (14) and digs (10) to lead the University of New Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-0 America East victory Friday evening at Lundholm Gymnasium. The game scores were 15-5, 15-13 and 15-9.
New Hampshire improved to 17-9 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Delaware is now 11-15 with a 4-6 league record.
The Wildcats led 5-4 in Game 1 when they won six consecutive points on the service of Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.), who had three service aces during the run. Coler finished the match with 12 kills, four service aces, two assists, three digs and two blocks.
After the Fightin’ Blue Hens trimmed the deficit to 11-5, Jillian Ross (Naperville, Ill.) closed out the game with four points on her serve.
In Game 2, UNH led 6-5 through two rotations and held a 10-8 advantage before the visitors, led by Cameo Neeman (14 kills) and Margaret Lapinski (10 kills), tied the game (10-10) and went on to take a 13-12 lead.
The ‘Cats knotted the score and won on a kill by Ross with Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.) serving. Knight had 10 kills and six digs in the match.
The strong service of Stacy Barnett (Crystal Lake, Ill.; 48 assists) propelled UNH to a 6-0 lead before Delaware earned a sideout. The ‘Cats built a 10-3 cushion before the visitors reeled off five consecutive points to close within 10-8. The Wildcats responded with a four-point run to earn match point and, one sideout later, sealed the victory on a Ross service ace.
The UNH volleyball team returns to action Oct. 28 vs. Drexel University. Match time at Lundholm Gymnasium is 4 p.m. Senior Day for the Wildcats is Oct. 29 (1 p.m.) against Towson University.
