New Hampshire volleyball splits at UConn tourney

STORRS, Conn. - The University of New Hampshire volleyball team opened up the season with a 3-1 victory over Texas Christian University Saturday at the IKON Husky Classic, as sophomore Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and freshman Bonnie Wilson (Moraga, Calif.) combined for 31 kills and 25 digs.

The Wildcats (1-1) dropped their second match of the tournament, which is being hosted by the University of Connecticut, to the University of California-Berkeley, 3-1 (30-26, 31-29, 30-20, 30-21)

Against TCU, Coler notched a team-high 16 kills to go along with 11 digs, while Wilson picked up 15 kills and a team-high 14 digs. Sophomore Erin Ludwig (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) finished the match with 36 assists, 11 kills and five service aces.

After winning the first game 30-22, UNH dropped the second game 30-28. The Wildcats rebounded, however, winning the final two sets in convincing fashion, 30-23, 30-24.

In the 3-1 loss to California, Coler had a game-high 18 kills in defeat, giving last season's America East Rookie of the Year 34 kills in two matches. Ludwig had 12 kills and 34 assists, while junior co-captain Lauren Knight (Centerville, Mass.) also delivered 12 kills for the 'Cats.

New Hampshire finishes the tournament Saturday vs. UConn. The match begins at 5 p.m.
