New Hampshire Volleyball hosting UNH Tournament

DURHAM, N.H. - For the third year in a row, the University of New Hampshire volleyball team will host the UNH Volleyball Tournament at Lundholm Gymnasium on Saturday.

In the wake of the recent national tragedy Brown University has withdrawn from the tournament, creating changes in the tournament format and schedule. According to the Brown University athletic website, all Brown Bear athletic events home and away have been canceled through Sunday.

The tournament, originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will consist of three matches round-robin style on Saturday, as the Wildcats play host to Big East perennial power Syracuse University and the Atlantic 10's University of Rhode Island.

Match times for the tournament are set for Syracuse vs. UNH at 10 a.m., URI vs. Syracuse at 3 p.m. and the finale between UNH and URI at 8 p.m. UNH enters the tournament with a 4-3 record. Syracuse also checks in at 4-3 and URI at 2-6.

Sophomore outside hitter Alyson Coler (Monte Sereno, Calif.) was recently named America East Player of the Week and sophomore setter Erin Ludwig (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) leads America East with a hitting percentage of .423.

This is the third season of the UNH Volleyball Tournament. Last year's winner, the University of Utah, swept the competition, beating Eastern Michigan University, the University of Massachusetts and UNH. Utah's Katrena Ellett was named tournament MVP as the Utes won in straight games all three matches. UNH finished third with a 1-2 record, while the Minutewomen finished second at 2-1. Current UNH student assistant Jen Walker was named to the all-tournament team.

In 1999, the first year of the tournament, the University of Oregon won the tournament with a 3-0 record. Again, the Wildcats finished with a 1-2 record, beating Holy Cross along the way. Beth Cole was the lone UNH representative on the all-tournament team.
