~Williams named 2004 MVP, Walker named Captain for 2005~
DURHAM, N.H. - Senior libero Jen Williams (Mountain View, Calif.) of the University of New Hampshire women's volleyball team was named Most Valuable Player for the 2004 season at the annual team awards banquet in the Oak Room at Huddleston Hall on Saturday night.
Williams enjoyed her finest season at UNH with a career- and team-high 468 digs in her senior year. She leaves UNH as the all-time dig leader with 1,398 and she became the sixth member of UNH's 1,000 dig club on Sept. 10 vs. Siena.
Junior Erin Walker (Fulton, N.Y.) was named captain for the upcoming 2005 season after serving as co-captain with senior middle hitter Natasha Otte (Plymouth, N.H.) this past season. Walker led the team in kills last season with 358 and her 227 digs was third best on the Wildcat roster. Her 45 service aces also ranked second on the team.
Freshman Holly Young (Dennisport, Mass.) was the recipient of the Ed Jentes Coaches Award, going to the Wildcat who makes the extra commitment and effort for the program.
Junior outside hitter Katie Steffens (Monroe, Conn.) earned the Judy Ray Academic Excellence Award for the first time in her career. The award goes to the UNH player who excels in the classroom with the highest grade point average.
Otte and Williams were honored for their outstanding accomplishments over the past four seasons. As the 2004 senior class, they leave UNH with two America East regular-season and tournament championships.
