BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior middle blocker Kirsten Bates (Calgary, Alberta) tallied a team-best 12 kills, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team lost its America East opener 3-0 to UMBC on Friday night at RAC Arena. The Wildcats are now 3-14 overall, 0-1 in America East, while the Retrievers are now 11-6, 1-0 AE. The set scores were 25-23, 25-12 and 25-23.
In addition to Bates offensively, Lindsay Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) each registered five kills. Sophomore setter Sara Heldman (Greenwood, Ind.) had a 28 assists, while defensively Lucia Bridova (Bratislava, Slovakia) had 13 digs.
In the first set was back and forth and saw 15 ties. UNH held a 20-18 lead until the Retrievers closed out the set on a 7-3 run. In the second set, the ties were close early on as UMBC held on to a 12-9 lead, before it rattled off 13 of the final 16 points to earn the double-digit win. In the third and final set the Wildcats built a small lead early and led it 15-11 before the Retrievers scored four straight to tie it at 15-15. The ties traded points over the next 12 points to make it 21-21. UMBC scored the next two points to take a 23-21 lead and went on to earn the two point win.
UNH returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 5 against America East foe Albany. Match time is 1 p.m. in Albany, N.Y. The Wildcats return home on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they play host to league foe Hartford. Match time is 1 p.m. at Lundholm Gymnasium.
