Volleyball Outlasted by Indiana State, 3-0, in Home Opener
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) recorded a team-high 12 kills and 14 digs for her first double-double of the season, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team lost to Indiana State, 3-0, Friday night in the opening day of competition at the Holly Young Invitational at Lundholm Gymnasium.
Indiana State improved to 5-3 on the season while UNH dipped to 0-9 overall. The set scores in the match were 22-25, 18-25 and 19-25.
Junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) paced the home side with 12 assists while freshman Taylor Dunklau (Mukwonago, Wis.) also reached double-digits with 10 helpers. Senior Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.) posted a team-high four blocks while senior Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta) added three rejections.
The teams were tightly contested to start the opening set, until Indiana State broke a 5-5 tie with a 4-1 run for the 10-6 advantage. The Wildcats cut it to three, 16-13, on a kill by Keding, but the Sycamores responded to with three straight to force a UNH timeout. The Wildcats came back from the break to once again pull within three at 20-17 and then came within a point, 23-22, on three consecutive Laquerre kills, but the Sycamores took the set at 25-22 for the 1-0 lead.
In the second set, the teams were again evenly matched early on at nine apiece, until Indiana State used a 6-2 run to take the lead at 16-11. UNH twice cut the lead to four on kills by Keding and sophomore Morgan Thatcher (Brockton, Mass.), but could not pull any closer as the Sycamores claimed the set, 25-18, to go on top at 2-0.
In the third set, the Wildcats responded from an early deficit to even up the score at 8-8, capped off by a Laquerre kill. Indiana State answered back with six straight for the 14-8 lead but the Wildcats fought back to tie the score at 16-16. The Sycamores ended the set on a 9-3 run to claim the stanza, 25-19, and seal the victory.
The Wildcats continue play at the Holly Young Invitational Saturday, opening against Fairfield at 12:30 p.m. before hosting Connecticut in the "Pack the Arena" match at 7:00 p.m.
