NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Morgan Thatcher (Brockton, Mass.) recorded a team-high seven kills and senior Lauren Laquerre (Concord, N.H.) added 10 digs, but the University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to Yale, 3-0, Friday night in the opening day of competition at the Yale/Quinnipiac Classic.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 overall while the Wildcats dipped to 0-13 on the season. Set scores in the match were 13-25, 15-25 and 17-25.
Junior Desiree Ates (Regina, Saskatchewan) and Laquerre each added four kills, while freshman Sam Henke (Millersville, Md.) posted a team-high 11 digs. Junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) led the lineup with 19 assists.
In the first set, Yale jumped out to an 11-2 lead before UNH stopped the early run with a Jessie Schnepp (East Longmeadow, Mass.) kill to pull within eight. Yale answered with back-to-back points to push the lead to 10 and then went on to claim the set at 25-13 for the 1-0 match advantage.
The second set featured close play early on as the teams were tied nine times for the eventual 12-12 score. UNH then scored two straight on a Jessy Dick (Lethbridge, Alberta) kill and a service ace from Henke, but the Bulldogs fought back to even it up once again at 14-14. From there, Yale ended the set on an 11-1 run to take the stanza, 25-15, for the 2-0 lead.
The teams were closely contested in the third set until Yale moved out in front by three for the 12-9 advantage. The Wildcats answered right back with four straight for the 13-12 lead, but the Bulldogs responded with five straight to fuel the 25-17 win and seal the match victory.
The Wildcats continue play at the Yale/Quinnipiac Classic on Saturday with a pair of matches against Army (11 a.m.) and Quinnipiac (7 p.m.).
