BALTIMORE – Sophomore Morgan Thatcher (Brockton, Mass.) recorded a team-high 12 kills but it would not be enough as the University of New Hampshire volleyball team fell to UMBC, 3-0, Friday afternoon at RAC Arena.
With the loss, the Wildcats drop to 8-18 overall and 6-3 in the America East, while the Retrievers improve to 13-11 on the season and 3-6 in conference play. Set scores in the match were 24-26, 19-25 and 20-25.
Thatcher posted a .550 hitting percentage in the match and also added four digs, while senior Amy Keding (Northbrook, Ill.) recorded 10 kills, five digs and three service aces. Junior Jansan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.) racked up 29 assists and freshman Sam Henke (Millersville, Md.) paced the team with 13 digs.
In the opening set, the Retrievers jumped out to an 11-6 advantage but the Wildcats responded with three straight to pull within two at 11-9. Trailing by three at 14-11, the Wildcats notched five straight for the 16-14 lead. After several more lead changes and the score even at 24-24, the home side posted back-to-back points for the win, 26-24, and 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, the teams were all evened up at 12-12 before the Retrievers scored three straight for the 15-12 advantage. The Wildcats managed to pull within two but could not get closer as the home side claimed the set at 25-19.
In the third set, the Retrievers raced out to a 15-10 lead before the Wildcats answered right back with four straight to pull within one at 15-14. After trading points, the Retrievers netted three straight and went on to claim the set, 25-20, to seal the victory.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday, Nov. 6 when they travel to Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
