CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior right-side hitter Morgan Thatcher (Brockton, Mass.) and freshman middle blocker Brenna Buckwalter (Evergreen, Colo.) of the University of New Hampshire volleyball team earned America East's Player and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Thatcher led New Hampshire to a 3-0 week, leading the conference with a 4.64 kills per set average while also ranking sixth with a .306 hitting percentage. She set the tone early in the week in a five-set win over Harvard with a match-high 22 kills and hit at a .353 clip. Thatcher paced UNH to a 3-0 sweep over Providence in the conference opener as she led all players with 14 kills and added 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. She also added a match-high 15 kills the next day in a 3-0 sweep over rival Dartmouth. The junior, who takes home Player of the Week honors for the second time in the last three weeks, has posted double-digit kills in all but three matches this season.
Buckwalter also helped the Wildcats to a 3-0 week, averaging 2.36 kills per set with a .234 hitting percentage. She ranked second-best on the team in both categories for the week. A vital part of the UNH staring lineup, Bukwalter notched a pair of 10-kill performances against Harvard and Providence, also adding three blocks in the victory over the Friars. Through 17 matches, Buckwalter ranks first on the team in hitting percentage (.245) and fourth on the team in kills (1.88).
The Wildcats return to action on Friday, Sept. 28 when they visit UMBC at 7 p.m.
