New Hampshire women harriers win CCSU Invitational

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Lesley Read (Dover, N.H.) won the Central Connecticut State University Ted Owens Invitational with a time of 17 minutes, 51.4 seconds to lead the University of New Hampshire women's cross country team to a first-place finish at Saturday's event.

UNH captured the meet with 36 points and was followed by the University of Connecticut (41). Vermont (94), Maine (101) and Colgate (133) rounded out the top five teams in the nine-team competition.

Read, a senior co-captain who finished eighth at last year's America East Championships, led a strong Wildcat contingent that took four of the top seven places at the meet. Fellow classmate and co-captain Caitlin Hayes (Keene, N.H.) was the third runner to cross the finish line with a time of 18:03 and was followed by Megan Hepp (Milton, Vt.), another senior whose fourth-place finish was timed in 18:16. Katie Litwinowich (Holden, Mass.) completed the Wildcat senior quartet with a seventh-place finish in 18:36.

The next UNH foursome earned the 21st-24th places with senior Lisa Winn (Rye, N.H.) also pointing for the Wildcats in a time of 19:21. She was followed by Mary Garrity (Manchester, N.H.; 19:30), Heather Carmichael (Windsor, Vt.; 19:31) and Ashley Vance (Manchester, N.H.; 19:38).

UNH returns to action October 4 at the Murray Keatinge Invitational, which is hosted by the University of Maine.
