DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's cross country team is ranked 12th in the preseason Northeast Region Poll that was released Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
New Hampshire is ranked second out of the four America East schools in the region as it was picked ahead of Vermont (13) and Boston University (15). The Wildcats tied for second at last year's conference championships and went on to place 12th at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet.
The USTFCCCA's regional rankings are a reflection of a team's strengths entering the year based on returning and new runners on each squad, and are selected by a representative in each region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.
The Wildcats open the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 31 when they host Providence and Maine at 1 p.m.
